2010 Greening Results by the Numbers:

Greening

Kokua Village – Fans visited the 37 partner booths in the Kokua Village to purchase local food and beverage items, learn more about products and services from green companies such as Kashi, Patagonia, and Stonyfield Farm,watch alternative energy demonstrations, and get information from 30 environmentally active nonprofit groups from around the islands. The Kokua Festival fan passport, a keepsake and guide for the event, encouraged festival attendees to take various environmental actions at the event. The participants turned in the passports at the end of each night and were entered to win great prizes such as orchestra pit seats! 6434 environmental actions were taken by Kokua Festval attendees.

Greening

Water Stations – Fans were encouraged to bring their own empty reusable water bottles to the Festival – 5,680 fans refilled for free at the Menehune Water Company water station located in the Kokua Village. 1,050 gallons of water were consumed, equivalent to diverting 8,400 16.9 oz plastic water bottles from the waste stream. Special edition Kokua Festival EcoUsable water bottles were available for purchase inside the gates and are now available at Kokua Hawaii Foundation Online Store

Greening

Zero Waste – Zerowaste collection stations were located throughout the festival grounds – at each station recyclables,food waste and compostables were separated by student volunteers from Kamehameha Schools Treehuggergroup, Kahuku, MidPac and Punahou School. 1,426 pounds of glass, 950 pounds of cardboard, 156 pounds of plastic, and 52 pounds of aluminum were collected. 20 cubic yards of biodegradables were collectedand 8 cubic yards of biowaste was composted. Recycling assistance provided by Reynolds Recycling and composting assistance was provided by Styrophobia.

Greening

Concessions and Catering – Locally grown, organic and natural food and beverage items were available for fans to purchase at the festival. The festival catering crew was committed to providing the artists, crew, and VIP guests with local, organic, and natural products. Thanks to the cooperation of Centerplate, Ginniberries, and Styrophobia the entire venue used sustainable food wares. All cups, containers, serving dishes, utensils, and napkins were biodegradable, recyclable, and/or reusable.

Greening

Earth Day Resolutions – Traveling cameramen and photo booths were located in the Kokua Village in partnership with Kanu Hawaii. 1,500 fans made Earth Day Resolution commitments to reduce their environmental impact.

Eco-Friendly Concert Merchandise – Kokua Festival t-shirts were designed in Hawai’i and made in the USA with 100% organic cotton and water-based inks. Concert posters and passports were printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper. Reusable Kokua Festival bags were sold. Limited Kokua Festival 2010 merchandise is currently available for purchase at Kokua Hawaii Foundation Online Store.  Graphic design and printing for Festival merchandise provided by Lively & Sons, King Graphics and Meridian Graphics.

Greening

Travel – 330 bicyclists utilized the Kokua Festival Bike Valet, 900 took the electric trolley shuttle, 17 people rode the Kokua Festival island wide shuttles, and more than 340 cars participated in the Kokua Festival Carpool Program.

Sustainable Biodiesel – Production vehicles and generators used at the Kokua Festival ran on 262 gallons of sustainable, locally produced biodiesel fuel courtesy of Pacific Biodiesel.

Greening

Carbon Offsets – The Kokua Festival sends a special “thank you” to the 243 fans who purchased an offset with their ticket purchase– helping reduce the environmental impact of fan travel. After all possible actions were taken, the remaining 1,871 Mton of carbon emissions were offset to make Kokua Festival climate neutral.

Greening

All at Once - Through a social action network called All At Once, fans can connect with the nonprofit groups at the Kokua Festival and across the world and share ideas for environmental action. Visit AllAtOnce.org to find out how to help inspire positive change in your community! More than 1,000 people participated in four beach cleanups around Hawaii to win tickets to the Kokua Festival.

Greening

Giving Back - Jack Johnson has been a member of 1% For The Planet since 2004, giving at least 1% of his revenues to environmental causes each year. His new charity, the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation supports All At Once nonprofit partners with donations and matching grants.
